Can a teenager with ADHD drive a car with a standard transmission???
Yes, I did and smoothly. Shifting becomes second nature. Now as a teen driver with ADHD, here is what you need to know. Minimize distractions! I'm not kidding, I crunched a bunch of cars up before I got a diagnosis and some help. I went many years without an accident and then was trying, without my meds, trying to dial out on one of those stupid blackberry phones and missed a red-light and T-boned an SUV. Nobody was hurt (thank God) but here is what you need to know.
Get rid of distractions in your car. Put the cell phone in the trunk. Ditch the GPS, iPod -- whatever. The radio is ok but we ADHD types are more susceptible to problems behind the wheel with distractions.
But it is OK to have a manual transmission.
