Hi Rachel, If your dad's pain is hot nerve pain, he has sciatica. The sciatic nerve runs down the leg. The usual cause for this is a herniated disc. That means that part of the disc is sticking out and hitting his sciatic nerve. I had a herniated disc, and it started with pain in my thigh, and eventually I could only lie down. The pain was unbearable when I stood or sat. I had an MRI which showed the herniated disc at L4 or L5. (I can't remember.) The surgery is done with lasers, and in two days I was up and running.
