Myelosuppression
Definition: A decrease in the ability of the bone marrow to produce blood cells. Myelosuppression occurs most commmonly in lung cancer as a side effect of chemotherapy.
Myelosuppression can result in decreased production of:
- Red blood cells (RBCs) - causing anemia
- White blood cells (WBCs) - causing leukopenia
- Platelets - causing thrombocytopenia
