I injured my knee a few years ago and it has a bit of arthritis. I am a very sound sleeper and often don't wake up to turn over at night. When I wake up my knee really aches, and I think I am causing more injury when I sleep, but what can I do?
I've tried changing positions, and managed to "program" myself to re-position a couple of times a night, but it still really Aches when I wake up.
How can I keep from re-injuring my knee while sleeping?
Anyone else have anything like this? What did you do?
The reason it feels worse when you don't move it is because of the arthritis. It's always worse in the mornings before you get up and moving around. Once you move around it eases a little. Moving just a few times a night really won't make that much of a difference, but you're not re-injuring it, it is simply stiff from being inactive while you sleep.
What you might want to try is a heat pad that you can leave on as you sleep and some Alieve just before you go to bed. In many people with arthritis, they need to medicate before they get up and move around.
