As far as how common those things are the possibilities include: Chronic chewing marks, traumatic ulcers, apthous ulcers (those little sores in your Mouth that you get once in a while that are VERY painful), a fungal or viral Infection of some kind (more common in denture-wearers who don't take them out at night and don't keep them clean and in the immune-compromised patient), areas that just don't have as high a concentration of Blood vessels as the surrounding areas of the tongue, and finally, a cancer of some kind. Notice that cancer is listed last because it is the LEAST likely thing that it COULD be. If they look the same and are on both sides, chances are they are normal anatomy, or not very serious. Make an appointment with your dentist to find out for sure. I hope this helps.
