When a segment of the lung collapses, it is referred to as atelectasis. Any condition where the lung is not able to fully expand can lead to atelectasis. Some of the conditions include tumors or mucus compressing the lung. People who undergo surgery may not be able to take deep breaths due to pain and are at risk for developing atelectasis. Prolonged bed rest that may result in shallow breathing is also a risk factor. There are effective treatments for atelectasis.
Watch for the symptoms. Depending on how much of the lung has collapsed, the symptoms may range from mild to more severe. Shortness of breath, coughing and chest pain are common symptoms. Fever sometimes develops as atelectasis progresses.
Undergo diagnostic tests to determine if you have atelectasis. Symptoms can mimic other respiratory disorders; therefore, it's essential to rule out other medical conditions. A chest X-ray will allow your Doctor to get a picture of your lungs and make a diagnosis.
Cough up mucus. Excessive mucus in the lungs can prevent them from fully expanding. If a person is unable to get the mucus out of his lungs by coughing, a tube can be inserted that will suction the secretions out.
Take antibiotics. Some people with chronic lung problems like Emphysema have excessive mucus production and frequent respiratory infections. Antibiotics may help clear up infections and treat atelectasis.
Do breathing exercises. A device called an incentive spirometry can be used to measure the amount of air you are breathing in. If you are using the device correctly, you will take in a deep breath and expand your lungs. A Nurse or respiratory therapist can instruct you on how to use incentive spirometry and how frequently you should be doing it.
Change positions often if on bed rest. Shifting to a different position can help promote drainage of mucus in the lungs. Be aware of your breathing if you are on bed rest. Take several deep breaths every hour to help expand your lungs and treat atelectasis.
