Atelectasis is the abnormal collapse of the alveoli in the lungs. Atelectasis may be caused by any illness or medical condition that prevents a person from inhaling deeply. Conditions may include neuromuscular diseases and respiratory infections. Atelectasis can also occur when an individual is breathing shallow due to sedatives, bed rest or Recovery from surgery. Atelectasis can be treated, but prevention is most important.
Recognize symptoms when they begin. Atelectasis can become progressively worse. Spotting symptoms early is essential to reverse the condition. Symptoms include shortness of breath, and increased respiratory rate and Heart rate. A Physician may find decreased breath sounds when listening with a stethoscope, and a chest X-ray can confirm a diagnosis.
Understand if you are at risk for developing atelectasis. If you have had surgery??specially Abdominal or chest surgery??ou may not be breathing deeply. Other risk factors include bed rest and having broken ribs.
Take deep breaths. Taking periodic deep breaths will inflate your lungs fully and help prevent atelectasis. This is especially important if you are on bed rest and not moving around normally.
Use an incentive spirometry device after surgery. This device is used to assist with Lung Expansion therapy. An individual inhales slowly and deeply through a mouthpiece. The device allows a Patient to see the volume of air they are breathing in. Providing visual cues helps patients develop goals and work towards reaching them.
Move around after surgery. Follow your physician and nurses instructions. If walking after surgery is allowed, do your best to get moving.
Manage chronic respiratory illnesses. Flare ups of problems such as Emphysema and Chronic Bronchitis can cause excess mucus production and atelectasis may develop. Keep conditions under control by following your suggested treatment plan.
