The major difference between a malignant tumor and a non-malignant tumor is their appearance and ability to spred. A benign tumor generally does not have the ability YET to spred or metastasize in the body. This does not mean, however, that It doesn't have the ability to grow in one spot and invade organs and tissues beside it. Brain Tumors are often benign, but because of their location in a tight spot can become life threatening if they are growing. Benign tumors are easier to treat but do not be lulled into believing that they are in any way 'safe'. Remove or treat them!!
If you think of a tumor by grades (Cell appearance under a microscope) this will help you visualize What is being said. Many tumors may start out as benign and than evolve into a malignancy. You should always be evaluated to make sure and if possible have a benign tumor removed before it changes.
1. Non-malignant or benign tumor - An early or pre-cancerous lump, bump, cyst. appearance is somewhat normal to the bodys cells under a microscope. The tumor is localized and can be surgically removed. Depending on the type of benign tumor, left untreated, it is possible for the tumor to mutate into cancer.
2. Malignant tumor - Under the microscope the cells begin to appear very abnormal. Malignant means the ability to send those abnormal cells throughout the body and establish new tumor growths (metastasis). Malignant tumor cells are classified by a system that measures whether they are a low grade (look somewhat normal, easier to treat) or high grade (very abnormal, more difficult to treat). Malignancy is also measured by stage which just ranks whether the cancer is localized in one spot, or at the highest grades has metastasized.
Grades and stages are for doctors to determine what types of treatment is necessary to help the patient.
Good luck with your daughter. Hope that she is being treated at a pediatric hospital as they are remarkable.
Experience. My son was diagnosed with stage IV abdominal cancer and was treated by a pediatric Oncology team in a Children's hospital.
