since my 5 year old started school this year she has started chewing on everything. such as hair chord on hat too chewing right through the wire on the computer ear phones at school. what is your opinion on what this could mean. she has not complained of pain in her Mouth. recently had an ear Infection but was chewing on things prior to this and has continued since ear has been treated.
my daughter does this also. I think a big part of it is they are doing it not on purpose but sub consciously, like one might chew on fingernails. Try to see if there is something triggering her chewing or if it is a sub conscious behavior she has adopted, like twirling hair, etc. You can ask her pediatrician if there is something they can suggest to help her quit this habit, but there is no need to chide her for it. Also, at home you could try to give her trident gum or some other sugar free gum. Whatever you do, don't make this a big deal...it's simply something that needs to be looked at. Do you have pets that chew on things? It's best to just try and divert her attention to something else instead of punishing her for doing something you Wouldn't do, or What DOESN't seem normal. My daughter also licks her lips and leaves them chapped, and I can't tell you how many things of chap stick she has lost. It's definitely an oral fixation.
