are you ever able to walk again and how long does it usually take
Of course you're able to walk again, but it will take awhile, sometimes up to a year or more. A successful repair involves completely replacing the torn ligament, and there are a number ways that this can be done. Your doctor will determine the best option.
Once the ligament has healed, the next step is to work the muscles around it to avoid this happening again. Muscles control the movement of the knee joint. Rehabilitation of these muscles is most important following an ACL injury or reconstruction.
This is a long process required to get back to normal, but not an impossible one. Of course, it depends on the overall tear. But just a note, if you pay attention to NHL hockey, Steve Yzerman of the Detroit Red Wings had a completely torn ACL and came back to play hockey. Until he finally retired last year.
Good luck
