okay so if i want to be a dental hygienist what do i have to graduate college w/ to become one? and is there anything i have to do after that like a Hygiene school?
this is in north carolina by the way. i dont know if that makes a difference.......
In order to get into hygiene school you have to do certain prerequisites, like your general ed classes and some science courses like microbiology and anatomy, etc. Check with your local hygiene school(s). Go here for a list of schools in your state: I'm not sure how competitive it is in North Carolina, but in some areas it's good to have some dental assisting experience and/or other interesting things on your application to distinguish you from other applicants.
To become a dental hygienist, after you complete your prerequisites and get accepted, it is a 2 year program granting you an associates degree. You can get a bachelors in hygiene at the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill, but the only reason to do that is if you are interested in teaching or in Public health, and if you do want to teach in a capacity more than a clinical instructor, you'll also want to get a masters. Also, you have to take a national board written exam and a regional or state clinical exam and often a state jurisprudence exam and then apply for a license in your state. After getting a license you have to take a certain number of continuing education credits each year (usually around 20 per 2 years) and renew your license every 2 years.
Good Luck!
