I just heard something about it on Americas Next Top Model.

one thing that it could mean is removing the clitoris. but usually it's actually considered genital mutilation. it's where they cut that off and sew your lips together down there. really painful and dangerous. periods just end up being really messy. it's so the girl will be "pure" until marriage.
also, i'd like to point out that it's the culture and that not all Women have that done to them, but the ones that don't sometimes have a special name that i hear has very bad connotations. but they probably think cutting open a woman's breasts and filling them with bags of silicone is disgusting, so don't judge other cultures because of their practices. you may not agree with them, but that's what they do and have been doing for a long time, you can't just expect them to stop
