My son has the chicken pox and am I more likely to contact it or Shingles, having had chicken pox in the past twice? I'm a bit scared that I might contact Shingles. What are the signs? Thanks
Chicken pox & Shingles are the same virus, Herpes Zoster. Shingles is the reactivation of herpes zoster in a person who has previously had chicken pox. You can not catch shingles from someone who has chicken pox. However, someone who has never had chicken pox can catch chicken pox from someone who has shingles. It is true that usually the elderly or immunosuppressed get shingles, but anyone who has previously had chicken pox can have them. Do not worry about contracting shingles from your son. There is always the possibility that you will have shingles, but it you do, it will have nothing to do with your son having chicken pox. The signs of shingles are vesicles (clear, fluid filled Blisters) that are on one side of the body & follow the line of a nerve. The most often area is on the side coming from the spine around on the ribs to The stomach. The vesicles will be in an area that is red & angry looking. It is very painful. The most dangerous area to have shingles is when it comes up on your face because it can get in your eye causing problems with sight. If that happens, it is essential that you see an opthamologist as soon as possible. I have had shingles (in my 20s) & while it isn't any fun, it is self-limiting. There are medications to help.
