I got my first UTI 10 years ago when I became sexually active. The doctor called it "Honeymoon Cystitis". I had all the symptoms: frequency, burning, Back Pain, Blood in Urine. It cleared up w/ an antibotic.
Since then, I continue to get them anywhere from once month to once every other month. The only symptom is the urgency. When this begins, I only need 1 or 2 doses of Azo and I think it goes away. However, I get so many sometimes Im not even sure if I have one. I never have pain or blood and take all the precautions (cotton underwear, cranberry pills, juice, vit C, urinating after sex.) I did drink primarly Diet Coke and have completing cut that out w/in the last month. The UTI test sticks are always negative because of 500 mg of Vit C I take. I want to start trying for a baby, but am scaried to because of the high risk of miscarriages linked to UTIs. The Dr always just gives 3 days of antibotics due to my only symptom being the frequency. Any advice?
Recurrent UTI is a common problem. 3 days of antibiotic is standard treatment for uncomplicated UTI. Recurrent UTI may require longer treatment. Has someone cultured your urine when you are symptomatic? I worry here about partial treatment...Have you considered seeing a urologist?
Testing may include:
Repeated urine culture
Ultrasound / IVP / CT scan of urinary system
Measurement of residual urine in the bladder after voiding
Cystoscopy
