Bartholin abscess: age?
Anyone here postmenopausal with a bartholin gland abscess? mom has one that fills and drains spontaneously and she's seeing a specialist next week. My google searches show that in postmenopausal Women this is rare and raises the possibility of cancer which is freaking me out. Hers fills and drains pus/blood, after it is soft and mushy. She has had it for 7 years. Anyone who can help ease my mind?
If she has it for 7 years, then it is likely recurrent Bartholin's abscess.
However, if you or your mother is concerned about the possibility of it being something more significant such as cancer, then you need to communicate with the doctor. If you are still worried and not satisfactory with your current doctor, please go for second opinion. She can have surgical treatment and removal of all or part of the abscess which should be sent to Pathology.
The Pathologist can then make a Diagnosis of benign Bartholin's abscess or something else. Cancer can undergo Cell death or necrosis and can even get infected which could give some similar signs and symptoms to benign abscess. So biopsy or tissue examination is the ultimate way to make the diagnosis.
Best of luck.
